Why Study Here 
Practical work is carried out both in the woods, the golf course and ornamental grounds of the college's 280-hectare estate and on outside worksites, giving a good range of realistic working situations. Skilled and experienced tutors make full use of the well-equipped workshops, laboratories and wide range of machinery during the course, whilst the diverse range of tree and shrub species in the woodlands, ornamental grounds and plant nursery provides an excellent resource for developing plant knowledge. Several renowned gardens and aboreta, such as Kew, Wisley and Winkworth, are within easy reach of Merrist Wood.

Entry Requirements 
4 GCSEs at C or above (including English and Science) or equivalent. You must have proven ability in tree climbing or be prepared to take a short tree climbing course. Those with Arboriculture Level 3 BTEC Diploma/National Certificate can move straight to the second year of the course.

Content / Overview 

Skills and knowledge for employment at supervisory and managerial level. First year: practical skills and knowledge for craft level work. Second year: industry experience and practices, techniques and knowledge needed by the professional arboriculturalist.



Delivery Method 
A mixture of practical and theoretical lessons.

Assessment 
Project work and written and practical skills tests.

Progression 
Employment with tree surgeons, arboricultural contractors and planning departments or self-employment.





All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position. There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding.
