Entry Requirements 4 GCSEs grades A*-C, including English Language and a Science subject, First Diploma/Diploma in Animal Care with merit/distinction profile, or a Level 2 equivalent qualification. You will need to be comfortable working with a range of animals and will need to pass the reference and interview process.
Content / Overview Content: The course provides a practical and theoretical environment to develop the skills required in a wide variety of animal management occupations. It also provides an opportunity to begin specialising in aspects of the industry. Topics: animal health, anatomy and physiology, animal handling and safe work, animal feeding, animal accommodation, animal nutrition, animal biology, investigative project in the animal sector, inheritance and genetics, animal behaviour, work related experience. Optional topics (choice of eight): animal nursing, animal welfare and breed development, wildlife populations, ecology and conservation, farm livestock management, zoological animal husbandry, biochemistry and microbiology, aquatics management, exotics animal management, wildlife management and rehabilitation, kennel and cattery management, dog grooming, chemistry for biology technicians, business management.
Delivery Method Elements of theory and practical based learning.
Assessment Written assignments and practical skills tests.
Progression Animal Management or Animal Behaviour and Welfare Foundation Degree followed by BSc at the College or university degrees in animal science, zoology or veterinary nursing or employment in kennels, veterinary practices, zoos or government research.
Additional Information You must wear safety footwear and a Merrist Wood sweatshirt and poloshirt.
All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position. There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding.
