Why Study HereThis course provides a head start to College life and work, providing practical skills and knowledge. Merrist Wood has well-equipped animal management resources including collections of domestic, companion and exotic animals.
Suitable For School pupils in Years 10 and 11 who want a practical taster course as an addition to GCSEs.
Application Method Application through your school followed by interview
Entry Requirements You should be working towards GCSE grades D-G and must be referred by your school. Entry is by taster/selection and interview. You must have a good track record of attendance and behaviour.
Content / Overview One day vocational course in animal care providing you with college experience whilst you study for your GCSEs. Topics: care of animals, accommodation of animals, movement and handling of animals, feeding of animals, safe and effective working practices.
Delivery Method One day a week course taught through practical and theoretical sessions at College.
Assessment Ongoing throughout the year via a portfolio of evidence. Theoretical and practical assessment.
Progression Full-time post 16 courses or Apprenticeships such as Animal Care First Diploma.
All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position. There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding.
