The course gives you the opportunity to experience an extensive range of practical work carried out both on our 280 hectare estate, with its woodlands, wetland features, grasslands etc, and on outside worksites, giving a wide range of realistic working situations. Our well-equipped workshops and wide range of machinery allow our skilled staff to provide the very best tuition.

The course is aimed at enthusiastic people who have an interest in countryside or estate skills and crafts; landowners wanting to improve their habitat management; potential landowners who wish to manage land in future; career changers who wish to pursue further experience in countryside or estate management.

No previous qualifications are needed, just an interest and enthusiasm in sustainable conservation values.

Content / Overview 
  • Woods and Woodland Ponds: 24 November - 8 December: Tree identification through leaf, woodland structure and woodland pond maintenance
     
  • Woodland Management: 19 January - 2 February: Coppicing and hurdle making
     
  • Hedge Management: 23 February - 8 March: Planning, planting and hedge laying
     
  • Countryside Fencing: 15 March - 29 March: Planning and erection of stained tock fencing


Delivery Method 
A range of practical 'real' projects on the Merrist Wood estate.

None

Progression 
Apply for other Estate Skills courses and then possibly the Level 1 Landbased Studies (Conservation) or Level 2 BTEC Diploma Advanced Practical Skills (Countryside and Environment) course.

Additional Information 
Be prepared to work outdoors in real working situations. Each course consists of 3 days, held on Thursdays.





All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position. There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding.
