Equine Management HND
Rebecca Wells
"I have always had a lifelong passion for horses and knew after leaving school that Merrist Wood could offer me the first step into building my career within equine. I completed the national award in equine management and gained valuable knowledge and experience in a variety of fields within the industry. It gave me the foundation knowledge I needed to go on and progress with my British Horse Society exams in management, riding and teaching.
At the age of 21 and after leaving college to gain further experience I decided that my chosen career path was to become a college lecturer in equine. To do this I knew I needed the higher national diploma in equine management so applied for the course at Merrist Wood for a second time! It offered a wide range of subjects ranging from biology and the science side of equine to the care of a competition horse, as well as planning and taking part in the annual summer show at the college.
I love to learn and was given all the tools I needed from my college courses to achieve the career I wanted. I now work at Merrist Wood College as a tutor in equine and have the chance to put into my students all the skills and knowledge I gained from my time here."

"The course has a good range of topics which covers many aspects of the industry from companion animals to captive wild animals and animal human interactions. The assignments can be completed on a variety of topics that most link to specific areas of the industry that you are interested in which really helps gaining knowledge in that area. There is also a module on professional development, this is great for networking and gaining experience and can really help in getting a job.
The college is both close to the A3 for commuting but also in large naturalistic surroundings with plenty of wildlife. The library staff are incredibly helpful and can help you find what you need. Animal care is also undergoing a rebuild soon so that really could be fab! Course tutors are incredibly helpful with assignments whilst still supporting independent learning, and have industry experience so really know what they are talking about! They can also help to guide you on your own career path."

I have really enjoyed coming to college, it has helped me to discover my own style as a florist and has opened my eyes to new techniques. I feel it has helped me to progress in my career. I would love to do more courses to keep my skills up to date and also to have my own business one day. I am currently taking part in RHS Young Florist of the Year - I would love to win a medal. My ultimate ambition is to be a recognised floral designer.

"Merrist Wood College ignited my passion for garden design, plantsmanship and landscaping. The two year course was challenging and exciting, giving me access to a wealth of information, from the fantastic library to the outstanding variety of speakers the College attracts. My resounding memory however is of the generosity of the tutors, their understanding of garden design and their devotion to the students, which is second to none.
I left Merrist Wood armed with all that I needed to find my place in the industry and with the will and desire to succeed. I now work as the sole designer for Bloomin' Marvellous Landscapes in Kingston and I couldn't be happier. I would highly recommend Merrist Wood to anyone serious about a career in garden design."

"A few years ago I decided to pursue my love of flowers and floristry. I was living in Cornwall at the time and decided to do my Level 3 at a local college. I loved it and wanted to explore the industry and the artistry of floristry further. I couldn’t do this in Cornwall so came to Merrist Wood – a decision I have never regretted!
I now have my dream job and continue exploring all the exciting aspects that the industry has to offer."
