Competitor at the TIMBERSPORTS competition

Sat 4th & Sun 5th March 2017 at Merrist Wood College

STIHL TIMBERSPORTS®, the world-renowned elite lumberjack sports competition, is on the lookout for the next generation of athletes to put their axe and saw skills to the test at a ‘Taster Weekend’ event at Merrist Wood College in March.

Potential STIHL TIMBERSPORTS athletes are invited to attend the event to see if they have what it takes to become the next STIHL TIMBERSPORTS champion. Those with lumberjack experience and those with none at all are encouraged to take part.

After completing an initial assessment, each attendee will receive expert training from the current British Professional Team in three rookie disciplines; Stock Saw, Single Buck and Underhand Chop. The most promising athletes will then be invited to receive further training, with the eventual aim of competing in a STIHL TIMBERSPORTS British Championship.

Due to the success of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS newcomer recruitment in 2016, this year sees the ‘Taster Weekend’ events extended to three, with other events taking placing in Shropshire and Edinburgh. The 2016 ‘Taster Weekend’ saw 17 athletes recruited to participate in further STIHL TIMBERSPORTS training, with newcomer Scott Fowkes (23) from Knighton winning the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS 2016 British Rookie Championship.

Spike Milton, former STIHL TIMBERSPORTS British Champion and official TIMBERSPORTS trainer, said: “STIHL TIMBERSPORTS was introduced to the UK in 2012 and its popularity continues to grow, thanks to its connection to traditional lumber jacking, a practice that is deeply rooted in this country’s heritage.

“Now a fast-paced and highly-skilled serious sport that attracts millions of viewers worldwide, I look forward to working with the next generation of STIHL TIMBERSPORTS British lumberjacks and giving them the technical training and support needed to turn them into champions.”
