Ofsted Recognise Outstanding Residential Provision at Merrist Wood College

Focusing on the things that matter most to children and young people’s lives has secured Merrist Wood College a third outstanding grade at a recent Ofsted inspection.

The College’s residential accommodation, for students who live in whilst studying, was recently inspected under Ofsted’s new Social Care Common Inspection Framework, which gives providers no prior notice of the inspection. The College’s residential provision was last inspected in 2012 and 2015, when it was also graded outstanding.

The Ofsted report, published this month, rated Merrist Wood College’s residential provision as “outstanding” in two of the inspection areas: the overall experiences and progress of young people, and the effectiveness of leaders and managers, including governors.  With “Good” in the inspection area of: how well young people are helped and protected.

Ofsted described the College as having highly effective services that consistently exceed standards of good.  The actions of the College contribute to significantly improved outcomes and positive experiences for young people.

Ofsted also commented that:

  • Residential students are extremely well supported by committed and experienced members of staff who place students’ well-being at the centre of their practice.
  • Residential students receive excellent pastoral support and guidance, leading to increased social skills, confidence, greater attendance and higher grades.
  • The senior management team is highly experienced and these individuals are highly committed to their roles.  They value the residential provision and seek to make it as rewarding an experience as possible for the students who stay there.
  • High quality monitoring of the service ensures continued development and improvement.

Associate Principal for Estates, Phil Coulthard commented “We are very pleased to retain our outstanding status for the third term and once again under a new framework. This confirms that our students are enjoying their experience and have benefitted significantly from living in the residential provision.”

Jacki Hughes Principal and CEO stated "We are delighted with the outcome of this report, and I congratulate all involved, students and staff, on an exceptional achievement. Our students are supported by committed and experienced members of staff who place their well-being at the centre of their practice. We aim to build on this success and continue with our relentless pursuit of improvements at the College for the benefit of our students."
