Public Services Students Put Their Training to the Test

Velvet Elson, Max Fletcher and Freia Bryceland

Principal of Merrist Wood College, Jacki Hughes, has praised four Public Services students who stepped in to help at a recent incident outside of the College.

Velvet Elson, Max Fletcher, Freia Bryceland and Alexander Aspinall, who are all studying the Level 3 Diploma in Public Services, were first on the scene and helped treat the injuries of those involved, before spending two hours directing traffic to ensure the scene was safe.

Jacki Hughes said: “I was shocked to hear about the incident outside of our College last night. I would particularly like to thank four of our Public Services students, who were first on the scene yesterday and handled the situation in a very professional manner. Not only did they help to treat injuries, whilst awaiting the emergency services, but also comforted the other people involved and spent two hours helping to direct the traffic and ensure the scene was safe. We are very proud of their actions last night.”

Speaking about the incident, Freia said: "I was shocked when I saw what happened, but I just threw my bag down and started to help by stopping the traffic. It's what we're training for, so I didn't think twice about getting involved and making sure everyone was OK."
