Financial Help

  • College Bursary – learners travelling over 3 miles to college could benefit from this is an attendance based bursary which help pay towards your college and travel expenses. The bursary is between £500 - £950, and the amount you will receive is based on the distance you travel to college.
  • Course Costs (Materials, trips etc) – this fund is designed to offer support towards the cost of materials, trips and visits associated with your course. Not all courses are supported and costs vary from course to course.
  • Guaranteed Bursary – this is an attendance based bursary of £1,200 for students who are in care, care leavers, carers, on income support in their own right, or in receipt of Disability Living Allowance/Universal Credit and Employment Support Allowance/Personal Independence Payment to help them overcome barriers to learning.

You could receive funding to purchase a meal at a College food outlet on days you are at College, if you meet the following criteria:

  • have a household income of less than £16,190 and be in receipt of Child Tax Credits (provided they are not in receipt of Working Tax Credits)
  • be a dependent of someone on a qualifying benefit e.g. Income Support, Income based JSA or ESA, Universal Credit, the guaranteed element of State Pension Credit, or under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.
  • be studying an EFA or ESF funded course - check with your course provider if you are unsure.
  • be aged under 19 and qualify for free tuition in England.

The College Accommodation Team supports students in our Halls of Residence at Merrist Wood College and in homestay accommodation. We also offer a Residential Bursary Scheme to assist qualifying students with costs. To be eligible for the Residential Bursary Scheme you need to be studying your first full-time Level 2 or 3 vocational course and unable to find a similar course locally to your home (within reasonable travelling distance).
