Subject Area

The Government funds and regulates adult Further Education and skills training in England. Content / Overview 

This course aims to provide relevant education and training leading to employment within the sports industry. The course reflects a vocational approach to a diversified industry and aims to give a learning experience, combining theoretical course study with practical skills, in a competitive environment.

All 16-19 year olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and Maths or to undertake Functional Skills, if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade C in these subjects, every year of their course, until they complete their studies.

The College has purpose built pitches for training, for football and rugby, as well as a weights room and sports hall. As well as this there are numerous local facilities including Surrey Sports Park (climbing, swimming, squash etc), Guildford Spectrum Centre (ice skating) and Quayside Water Sports (wakeboarding and waterskiing).

Students will also have the opportunity to experience activities and sports including water sports, climbing, canoeing, softball and others.

Anyone who is interested in working within the sports and leisure industry in careers such as coaching, sports development, teaching, governing body or club administration, fitness instruction or personal training, leisure centre management or sales and marketing.

Entry Requirements

Two to four GCSEs at grades 2 - 3 (grade D - E) or above, including Maths and English, or a Level 1 qualification at Merit or above. You will also need experience of playing sport and will need to pass the reference and interview process.

Delivery Method

Through a variety of practical and theoretical sessions and some informal assessments.


Independent study will be required to complete assignments in order to meet deadlines. There will be an expectation that you will partake in regular training sessions in your own time to maintain an appropriate level of fitness for this course.

Further Study

Level 3 BTEC Diploma in Sport or specific courses in Rugby, Football or Golf or work in the sport and leisure industry.

Additional Information

While it is not necessary to have a high level of physical fitness, students will be expected to undertake physical activity as part of the course. Due to the specific nature of the course there are additional costs for clothing, visits, travel, outdoor activities etc. Fees are payable at enrolment.

All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position.

There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding (identified as 'no fee remission available on this course').
