The Government funds and regulates adult Further Education and skills training in England. They pay a proportion of the cost to deliver the course and expect the student, or a sponsor, to pay the remaining portion. This is referred to as the ‘tuition fees’ and is what we display on our guide. If a course or a learner is not eligible for government funding the Full Cost /international fees will be liable. Please refer to our International fees page for more information.
Please note that the fees shown relate to the WHOLE programme but may be subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances, including changes to Government funding and remission policies, so before enrolling on a course please check with the College for the latest information. The College also reserves the right to close, or not to start any published course.

Content / Overview
If you are interested in a career in sport and developing your own football skills and game understanding alongside a study programme of sports coaching, development and fitness, then this is the course for you.
You will undertake and gain an understanding of the football industry, and a range of coaching techniques and programmes. Our aim is to give you the tools to both evaluate and develop your own performance, ultimately improving you as a player and student here at the college.
Fitness, Nutrition, Psychology, and improvement of own football and coaching skills are some of the football-related subjects we offer and opportunities to apply your skills in your chosen environment.
All 16-19 year olds on full-time programmes will be required to retake GCSE English and Maths or to undertake Functional Skills, if they have not already attained the equivalent of a GCSE grade C in these subjects, every year of their course, until they complete their studies.

We have qualified FA Tutors, so you will have the opportunity to undertake (in addition to your main programme) your FA Level 1 and 2, FA Coaching Disabled Footballers, FA Safeguarding and Emergency First Aid, Gym Instructor Level 2. These courses may incur an additional cost if you wish to undertake.

Merrist Wood College has been appointed as a football Super Hub.
The Merrist Wood College Football Development Centre offers full-time education programmes for 16-18 year olds, which incorporates both full-time football training with post-16 education across five days.
Students have the opportunity to take a course related to their career interests and gain an understanding of the football industry whilst developing their own football skills and performance.
Coaches working on the programme are experienced college tutors, and UEFA qualified coaches. The college team plays in the top national league and the coaches and tutors work hard to create opportunities for the players to play outside of college.

- Individual player analysis and training plans

The football programme at Merrist Wood offers the opportunity to combine an interest in football and sport in general, and gain an academic qualification at the same time.
Application followed by individual interview
At least four GCSEs at grade 4 (grade C), including Maths and English, or a relevant Level 2 sports qualifications (for example Level 2 BTEC Sport) at Merit or above.
Lectures, practicals, demonstrations and guest lectures
Independent study will be required to complete assignments in order to meet deadlines. There will be an expectation that you will partake in regular training sessions in your own time to maintain an appropriate level of fitness for this course.
Written presentations, portfolios, verbal presentations, demonstrations and practicals. There will be clear College submission deadlines which will need to be met. Failure to meet these may result in failure to complete the course.
Upon completion of your studies you will have the necessary skills and qualifications to begin a career in sport, these include options to go to University, the fitness industry or coach football both in the UK and abroad with our U.S.A and China links. Some of our students have gone on to some great careers in sport across a range of disciplines and also even stayed on to work with us.

All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position.
There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding (identified as 'no fee remission available on this course').
