Content / Overview


The fees shown do not include assessment fees which are payable directly to the assessment centre. Information on this will be included in the joining pack. Assessment dates are discussed/arranged during the course.

The PA6 course includes:

  • Personal Protective Equipment PPE
  • Interpreting product information [product labels]
  • Mixing the correct amount of pesticide/chemical safe application
  • Weather conditions

Trainees must be at least 16 years old. Please bring your own personal protective equipment – overalls, wellington boots, protective gloves and face shield. Personal protective equipment can be provided for the course, if necessary, and advice given on suitable equipment to buy.

Practical instruction is carried out by highly qualified tutors in the extensive ornamental grounds, plant nursery, woodlands and sports turf areas at the College, using both hand tools and modern machinery and equipment. Merrist Wood has developed a considerable reputation for horticulture. The diverse range of plants in the College’s 280 hectare estate, together with purpose-designed buildings, including lecture rooms, laboratories, library facilities and computer suites, all provide an ideal environment for horticulture students.

These courses are designed for sprayer operators and all those whose work involves the use of pesticides.

Entry Requirements 


Trainees must be at least 16 years old and have a reasonable standard of literacy and numeracy.

This is a practical module and is assessed by a practical demonstration to the assessor and by oral questions.

All students aged 19 years or over on 1 September in the first year of their course are expected to pay tuition, registration, exam fees and all other course related costs. Some assistance with these costs may be available depending on your circumstances and the latest government funding position.

There are normally no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay if you are aged 16-18 on 1 September in the first year of your course and are a British or European Union resident. This does not apply to HNCs/Ds, Foundation Degrees, Degrees or courses that do not attract government funding (identified as 'no fee remission available on this course').
