There was lots of Autumnal Animal fun at Merrist Wood last Sunday as the College opened up to the public, following the awarding of their zoo licence in the Summer. The event was centred in the Animal Management Centre, where visitors were able to tour around the animal biomes and meet various species, such as the family of Von der Decken's hornbills, who had 5 chicks earlier this year. Sherman, the three banded armadillo, and the Cuban iguana were popular, as were the monitor lizard and coatis. Other activities guests could enjoy included pumpkin carving, children's crafts, reptile handling, a fun treasure trail and a Halloween fancy dress competition, judged by the resident vampire Count de Vein! The College is now open to the public most weekends for pre-bookable Animal Encounter tours, giving guests an opportunity to get up close to the animals and learn more about them. The next large public event will be the Festive Animal Fun Day on Sunday 2 December - tickets are available on the website but hurry as last year we sold out!
To book an Animal Encounter tour or tickets for the Festive Animal Fun Day, visit the Merrist Wood Events website www.merristwoodevents.co.uk or call the events team on 07854 274866 for more information.
