Merrist Wood College opened its doors to the public for their annual Festive Animal Fun Day last Sunday 1 December. The event, which is centred round the College’s large collection of animals, allowed visitors to tour the Animal Management Centre, farm, walled garden and other areas with festive crafts and stalls.
Families met a wide range of exotic species in the Centre’s tropical and arid biomes, including Sherman the three-banded armadillo, Von der Decken’s hornbills, monitor lizards, coatis and more. Guests could also meet festive animals such as donkeys and turkeys, calves, goats and Twinkle the pony, and feed the animals at the Farm, which houses rhea, rare breed sheep, llamas, alpacas, pigs and more.
Other activities guests could enjoy included children's crafts, small animal and reptile handling, a fun festive trail and face painting. ‘Story Time with Santa’ was a great success, and children were given the opportunity to meet Santa and share their Christmas wishes.
The College is now open to the public most weekends for pre-bookable Animal Encounter Tours, giving guests an opportunity to get up close to the animals and learn more about them. To book an Animal Encounter Tour or see future events, please visit the Merrist Wood Events website at www.merristwoodevents.co.uk or call the events team on 07854 274866 for more information.
