Springtime is here at Merrist Wood College and we’re all very much looking forward to our new arrivals! As the days become longer and the plants start to grow, our animals get more active as the weather gets warmer and breeding season is upon us. We are expecting many new arrivals including 53 singles, 32 twins and 3 sets of triplet lambs as well as 1 single, 5 twins and 1 triplet set of goats, of which 2 are pygmy goats.
This is a key part of our course modules for countryside, animal management and agriculture, taught here at the College, which allows the students hands-on experience helping with the births and looking after the lambs, ewes, kids and the goats.
Charlotte Dodd, Livestock Technician at the College, said: “Springtime and the lead up to Fleecy Frolics event is always a fun time of year for both students and staff. Lambing gives our students valuable learning experience, which prepares them for their future career.”
The College’s public lambing event ‘Fleecy Frolics’ is a celebration of nature and countryside crafts and features lamb viewing, animal handling, farm visits, countryside crafts and more…and offers a great day out for the whole family! This year’s event will be held across two days; Saturday 25 April, 12pm–4pm (pre-booked online ticket sales only) and Sunday 26 April, 10am-4pm (tickets available to buy online and on the day).
There are also other opportunities to meet the College’s animal collection including Animal Encounter Tours, Animal Birthday Parties, Meerkat Experiences and Junior Keeper Days.
